5 Tips to Save Money on Travel in Summer 2025

AD – This is a collaborative post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If you’re anything like me, Summer is a very expensive time of year. There are so many fun activities I want to do – whether that’s going out for food, meeting up with friends or travelling to a new place.

Although travel isn’t always the cheapest activity, there are a few ways to save a little money. Let’s take a closer look.

5 tips to save money on travel in 2025

Let’s take a look at 5 ways to save money on travel in 2025 – explore new places without breaking the bank!

1. Choose microadventures

Microadventures are my new favourite thing. Instead of spending lots of money on huge holidays abroad, I like finding small, simple ways to enjoy myself closer to home.

Microadventures include activities like:

  • Going to a local art gallery or museum
  • Visiting a nearby city for a day trip
  • Taking yourself on a solo date, such as going to a new restaurant
  • Going for a hike in your local countryside

It’s not about replacing those big holidays, if that’s something you can still afford to do. It’s just about choosing smaller, cheaper alternatives that can help you try new things on a budget.

2. Split your costs

If you want to go on an expensive holiday, why not split the costs with friends? Or organise a holiday with your partner and another couple?

Some hotels and attractions will offer discounts for bigger groups, which means travelling with others could help you save a little money.

There are plenty of groups for solo travellers or couples looking for a bit of company – or you could buy a ticket for a big coach trip to travel abroad on a budget.

If travel is your thing, you could ask for money or travel checks for your birthday and Christmas gifts from loved ones.

I recently went to wedding where the couple didn’t ask for gifts – they asked for donations to their honeymoon fund. This is a great way to reduce waste and get something you really need.

3. Do your research

If you want to save money on travel in 2025, you need to do your research. Some costs are inevitable – such as flights or trains – but there are ways to avoid excessive pricing if you’re savvy about it.

You could:

  • Set fare alerts on your phone to look for the cheapest flights
  • Avoid peak dates, such as the Summer holidays
  • Explore alternative accommodation, such as Airbnbs or hostels
  • Research affordable holiday locations for 2025

Whether you want to book a beach holiday in Sardinia or a trip to London, a little research can go a long way!

4. Stay close to home

There are so many great spots to check out right here in the UK. You could go for a day trip to a new city or a short staycation in the countryside.

If you’re not from the UK, look for local spots that offer you a fun change of pace, all without leaving the country.

You could also look for less popular holiday locations. The flights or trains might not be as frequent, but they may be cheaper – and you’ll get to explore a place untouched by millions of tourists.

5. Look for free activities

Although some tourist activities are expensive, others may be completely free! Do some research to find cheap or free ways to explore a new place – whether that’s in the UK or abroad.

You might be surprised about the kind of deals you can get as a tourist. Some attractions offer special discounts for bigger groups, for example, or you could go at an off-peak time to save some pennies.

Many museums are free, as well as public spaces like beaches, nature spots and local landmarks. Just walking around a new place can help you soak up a new culture or learn about your location.

  1. Brilliant tips and ideas, and I especially like the Micro Adventures!

I tried geocaching last year which I loved! It was like a treasure hunt combined with an escape room and was a fantastic and different way to explore where I live, and beyond! And it’s free!

You’re so right, summer doesn’t have to be expensive 🥰

  3. super idea on microadventures and also splitting costs. i usually travel alone so always find other travellers in hostels and when we go out for meals, usually split large pizzas to lower the cost. the other thing that i do a lot is to not spend money on bank fees so ive got myself 2 fee free cards (one is fidelity another wise) – i use both their limits. use debit card for withdrawals and credit card for swiping and then also find the free atms around using apps like ATM Fee Saver. seriously nobody should be spending money on atm and bank fees, they really add up.
