In 2021, I decided to write and publish my own ebook – and in 2024, I’ve re-released it with lots of brand new insights.
I started writing my ebook back in November 2020. The world was a bleak place and lockdown restrictions were rampant.
Covid cases were climbing – and I knew I needed a distraction from what was going on outside. So, I channelled my frustration into my writing, uploading a short ebook for sale in March 2021.
However, since then, I’ve learned a lot! I’ve written blog posts for global clients and got to grips with the ins and outs of writing engaging content – so I thought my ebook was due for an update.
Creating your own ebook, guide, resource, template or product is a great way to make a bit of passive income. Once you’ve created your product, you can sell it forever – and your ebook demonstrates your knowledge about a certain subject.
While writing, uploading, refreshing and promoting my book, I’ve learned so much! I’ve added new pages about CTAs, headings and AI content – and I’ve created more helpful resources and templates for bloggers or writers.
I learned how to write for an audience, how to effectively promote my work online and how to stay motivated with my writing.
In this blog post, I’ve put together 6 top tips for writing your own ebook – updated for 2024
Here are 6 tips to help you get started with your ebook or resource:
- Know your stuff
- Choose a platform
- Check your writing
- Make the most of social media
- Stay motivated
- Directly engage with your audience
Let’s take a closer look…
1. Know Your Stuff
When it comes to writing your own ebook, it’s so important to know your stuff.
Whether you want to write about travel or you’re passionate about the process of writing, you need to know your subject to advise people about it.
For example, I chose to write an ebook all about writing blog content, as I have 7+ years of experience writing for my own blog and other clients.
It doesn’t matter what subject you choose, just make sure you properly understand it before you put pen to paper!
2. Choose a Platform
Once you’ve written your ebook, you need to choose how you want to sell it. This guide to uploading your work on Gumroad helped me understand the ins and outs of getting my ebook out there.
I also received some great advice from my followers online. I really recommend choosing a platform that you understand. If you can use it to promote your product and engage with your audience, that’s a plus, too!
3. Check Your Writing
You need to check your writing with a fine-toothed comb. Make sure you’re always providing value, and keep your writing simple for people who might not yet understand your subject.
For example, if you’re writing an ebook about SEO, you need to make sure your language is clear and simple. Just because you’re an expert, others might not be.
In my blog writing ebook, I’ve included resources and checklists for proof-reading your content, as I know just how difficult it can be to check your own work.
4. Make the Most of Social Media
Once you’ve written and perfected your ebook, you need to decide how to promote it to your readers. Whether you’re offering your resource for free – or you’re charging a small fee – it’s important to put yourself out there.
Social media is a great way to spread the word about your ebook – but it’s not the only way. Word of mouth is also important. Speak to anyone and everyone about your ebook – you never know when someone might want to check it out.
5. Stay Motivated
When you’re writing your ebook, be prepared for ups and downs. You’ll feel motivated when you make a sale, and then down when you’ve not sold an ebook for a while.
Passive income investments don’t always make a lot of money overnight. However, once you’ve created your ebook, you can promote and sell it forever – so don’t lose motivation if your sales go up and down.
For me, I haven’t made hundreds of sales, but my ebook shows that I know what I’m talking about in the world of blogging and writing – and it’s been great to connect with happy customers online.
6. Engage with Your Audience
I love engaging with bloggers online – and it’s one of the best ways to get the word out about my blogging ebook. Think about where your audience hangs out, and engage with them there.
This might be through social media, networking events or in-person groups. Get your ebook directly out to your audience as much as you can.
I also recommend chatting with other people in your industry for tips, ideas and inspiration. Once you’ve published your ebook, this community is a great place to find any much-needed feedback.
In my ebook, I look at how to write engaging blog content – including guides, resources and templates you can use again and again!
