6 Books to Read in Spring 2024

I first started my blog to write about books. Now, that’s changed over the years – but that doesn’t mean I don’t still love to read. In fact, reading is one of my favourite hobbies. It makes me a better writer, too.

As we come up to Spring, there are lots of opportunities to start reading something great. I love spending the warmer months reading outside or visiting local libraries to get lost in a new book.

In this blog post, I’ve put together 6 books to read in Spring 2024 – a healthy mix of iconic books and exciting new releases. Tell me all your recommendations in the comments!

1. ‘Julia’ by Sandra Newman

A retelling of George Orwell’s ‘1984, ‘Julia’ tells the story of what Oceania is like for women. It looks at abortion, sex, relationships, motherhood and general day-to-day life for women of all ages.

Julia is a character in ‘1984’, but the main character Winston Smith is the focal point of Orwell’s classic novel – and so Sandra Newman aims to shine a light on a different side of this dystopian world.

I really enjoyed reading ‘Julia’. It only came out in 2023 and it’s filled with lots of fascinating references to current issues. Although I preferred the first part to the second, it’s a great read for Spring – and it’s so easy to get into the mind of the narrator.

2. ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ by Celeste Ng

‘Little Fires Everywhere’ is a great read. It follows Mia Warren and Elena Richardson, two women living in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The women are very different – and they come into conflict more than once as they navigate motherhood in this small town.

The book also follows the story of Bebe, a Chinese woman fighting for custody of her daughter.

Like Celeste Ng’s ‘Everything I Never Told You’, ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ discusses a range of important topics, including race, gender, class, motherhood and more. It’s well worth checking out in Spring 2024.

3. ‘The Heiress’ by Rachel Hawkins

‘The Heiress’ came out in January 2024, following the story of Camden McTavish, adopted son of notorious billionaire Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore.

After his mother’s death, Camden inherits everything – but he turns his back on that life, choosing to move away and enjoy a normal life.

However, 10 years later he’s pulled back into the McTavish family – and he soon finds himself wrapped up in his mother’s crazy, intoxicating world.

‘The Heiress’ sounds like the perfect atmospheric read for Spring 2024 – including plenty of action and intrigue.

4. ‘The Women’ by Kristin Hannah

‘The Women’ by Kristin Hannah is a historical fiction novel all about the female heroes of the Vietnam War, focusing on one woman’s experiences as a nurse overseas.

The book shines a light on the fascinating, untold stories of women in the Vietnam War, looking at friendship, patriotism, hope and betrayal.

I love to dip into historical fiction, so I can’t wait to pick up a copy of ‘The Women’ in Spring 2024.

5. ‘My Life on the Road’ by Gloria Steinem

I loved ‘My Life on the Road’! It’s such an amazing insight into Gloria Steinem’s life as an activist travelling around America. She writes passionately about feminism, Native American rights, abortion, lesbianism, race and more.

Gloria Steinem is one of my role models. She has so many brilliant stories to tell about her activism, as well as her vibrant personal life. Pick up a book in Spring that will inspire you to fight for what you believe in!

6. ‘Come and Get It’ by Kiley Reid

In January 2024, Kiley Reid brought out her second novel ‘Come and Get It’. I absolutely loved Reid’s first novel ‘Such a Fun Age’ – it was a refreshing look at race and class in America.

Her second book follows Millie, a student who forms a relationship with a visiting professor. She offers to help Millie make a bit of extra money – and the two women soon become intertwined in this fascinating campus novel.

‘Come and Get It’ is a tense, provocative look at our money-obsessed society – and it sounds like the perfect read for Spring.

  1. Some great recommendations here! I can’t wait to read Kiley Reid’s new book. I loved her first novel. I’m currently reading Anne Tyler’s ‘French Braid’ which tells the story of a family through each chapter set in a different decade. Really enjoying it!

  2. I have just finished The Women and it was a fantastic book, I highly recommend it and will probably include it in a book post on my blog too. I’ve also read Little Fires Everywhere and adore anything Celeste Ng writes (her book Our Missing Hearts is one of my favourites).

I will have to check out the other books mentioned in your post and add them to my TBR list!

  3. The Women is a book I would love to read because I like reading about different historical periods. I have not read a fiction book about the Vietnam War, but I know that quite a bit about that time period. I love to hear the experiences of nurses during that time period. Thanks for sharing this list of books.
