One of my favourite things about freelancing is building long-term client relationships. I love short-term projects, but there’s something so fantastic about forming long-term relationships with businesses that need in-depth, ongoing freelance support.
I love taking the time to see inside businesses and build lasting relationships with my clients, but that’s not always easy. To build successful client relationships, you need to be clear and confident about what you both need.
You need to set your boundaries, communicate effectively and know when to reach out for support – just like with any other relationship!
5 practical tips for building successful client relationships
Effective client relationships are the cornerstone of your success as a freelancer. You need to learn how to communicate your needs and meet expectations for clients.
My tips for building successful client relationships include:
- Understand your client’s needs
- Communication is key
- Set your boundaries
- Know when to reach out for support
- Do a good job!
Let’s take a closer look at each tip in a little more detail, including examples from my own experiences working for myself.
1. Understand your client – what do they need?
First things first, it’s important to understand your client. You need to know what they want, their goals, their budget and what they expect from your work together.
It’s all about making sure you’re the right freelancer for the job. Sometimes, after meeting with a client, I get a sense that they need someone with different skills, qualifications or experience.

In that case, I often refer them to other specialists who will do a good job. Referrals are gold dust to fellow freelancers – and it’s always helpful to show your client that you might not be the best person, but you do know who is.
At the start of a new client relationship, learn how, when and what your client needs from you. This will help you meet expectations and build ongoing relationships within your business.
2. Communication is key
Just like in any good relationship, you need to communicate. Tell your clients what you do, what you charge and what they can expect from your work together.
This is a great way to set your boundaries and ensure your client knows what you do (or don’t) offer. However, your communication shouldn’t stop there.
Keep in touch with your client throughout the project. Ask questions, raise queries and let them know when you’ve completed your work. And don’t forget to ask for a testimonial or future referrals at the end of the project!
3. Set your boundaries
Boundaries are an essential part of any freelance/client relationship – and they go both ways. Your client needs things from you, but you need things from your client, too.
Here are some examples of boundaries for freelancers:
- Working days and times
- Communication methods
- Project scope
- Delivery times
- Payment terms
I try to avoid urgent delivery times, unless I know the client and understand the need for urgency. I also stick to roughly 9-5 working times. No work on the weekend is one of my top non-negotiables!
4. Know when to reach out for support
Just because you work for yourself, that doesn’t mean you’re doing everything on your own. If you’re experiencing an issue with a client, it’s important to handle it sooner rather than later.
From taking a step back from work that doesn’t feel right to finding an employment attorney, it’s always okay to reach out for support.

I’ve loved working for almost all of my clients, but I’ve had a few bad experiences. One of them led to burnout, which I’m sure I could have avoided if I’d reached out for support a little earlier.
Building successful client relationships (and a successful business in general) is all about knowing when you need help.
5. Do a good job!
It goes without saying, but one of the best ways to build a successful client relationship is to do a good job. Here are some ways to do that:
- Deliver what you’ve promised on time
- Be friendly and professional
- Stay in touch with your clients
It might sound simple, but doing a good job for your clients will encourage them to come back for more work, which is the true sign of a successful client relationship. You can build a lasting partnership, where your client knows they can trust you, and vice versa.
