I’ve put together 24 fun writing activities for writers in 2024. These activities are short, easy and affordable – perfect if you’re looking for a bit of inspiration. Let your creativity flow!

Attend a workshop

You could go to a workshop about writing, or attend a talk by a famous author. It’s bound to spark some ideas.

Draw your characters

My Dad gave me this idea! It’s great to see your characters come to life – and it can help you find more detailed descriptions for your story.

Write a guest post

You could write a guest post for a blogger or website to get your writing out there. Magazines like The Linguist Magazine accept guest articles from writers.

Write a poem

Try out your skills by writing a poem. This is a great activity if you regularly write prose or online content, for example. It’s something a bit different!

Read a book

Curling up with a good book is a lovely way to get inspiration and learn how your favourite author crafts their writing.

Rewrite your favourite story

Take a book or story that you love – and try rewriting it differently. You could choose to focus on a different character’s point of view, or you could use a different writing style. This can help you spark new ideas for your writing.

Use a random word generator

Pull up a word generator and try to incorporate the results into a poem or story. This is a fantastic way to constantly improve your writing.

Start a blog

You could start a blog in 2024. This is a great way to come up with consistent content without any pressure. You could write a new blog post if you already have a blog.

If you’re finding it hard to get started, check out my blog writing ebook ‘The Art of Blog Writing‘. I’ve updated and re-released my book, including guides, templates and resources to help you get writing.

Plan out a book idea

Planning out a book idea can help you get thinking about your writing. You could map out a current idea, or mindmap a new story.

Submit a competition entry

There are competitions for all areas of writing, from essay writing to short stories. Submitting a competition entry can get you thinking about your writing – and you might get a prize, too!

Write a book review

Writing a book review can get you thinking. You can dissect the writing and consider how you can integrate what you love into your own writing.

Collaborate with a friend

You could collaborate with friends on a new writing project. Just bouncing your thoughts with someone else can spark millions of new ideas. I love to meet up with my Mum to chat about writing as I always come away with lots of new ideas.

Start a newsletter

Reach out to readers with your thoughts. This encourages you to get writing on a regular basis. It doesn’t matter who receives it or what you’re writing about – it’s just about letting your thoughts flow.

Write a letter

Handwrite a letter to someone to get your creative juices flowing. You could even write a letter to your future self, including goals and predictions about your life.

Read a poem

I’ve recently started reading a poem every day before I go to sleep. I’ve started with Sylvia Plath’s ‘Ariel’ but I’m hoping to continue with different collections. This helps me spark new ideas!

Complete a writing challenge

There are so many fun writing challenges out there, such as:

Some of these challenges might take up more time than others, so make sure to choose a challenge that works for you.

Write a journal entry

Sitting down to write in a journal by hand can help you connect with your words and get your thoughts down on the page.

Join a book club or writing group

A group is a great place to exchange ideas with other readers and writers. Look into local groups or join a writing club online.

Use a writing prompt

A writing prompt is a brilliant way to get creative! Generate a prompt online to get started. It doesn’t matter what the story looks like at the end of it – it’s about opening your mind and letting your ideas flow.

Write a stream-of-consciousness

A stream-of-consciousness is all your thoughts and feelings, written down in a continuous flow. You can get in tune with what’s going through your head – and get your ideas down on paper.

Create a writing playlist

Put together a writing playlist. Make sure to include songs that inspire and motivate you to get writing.

Tell someone a story

You could make up a story for your kids or tell a story to yourself. This is a great way to use your imagination, inject a bit of passion back into your writing – and let your creative juices flow.

Write a piece of flash fiction

Flash fiction is a short piece of writing, typically under 1500 words. Set a timer and write your flash fiction against the clock to practice your skills.

“Interview” your characters

If you’re writing a book, pretend your characters are there in the room with you. Interview them about their life experiences or feelings. You can use these “interviews” to think like your characters and understand them better.

  2. Love this list of creative ideas to get writing! I always find the hardest part to any writing session is just getting started, so some of these are great ideas to make that happen 🙂 I personally feel more inspired by getting out to write; walking first helps to get the ideas flowing, and then retiring to a favourite coffee shop to people watch and write is my favourite thing to do 🙂

    1. Thank you! Yes I think getting started always feels so daunting – so it’s great to have a prompt or a push. Getting out to write is one of my favourite things to do too, it’s much easier to be creative in a different environment 🙂

  3. Love it! I’m a blogger, reader and writer and these are some good recs. Reading, for example, is pretty much a must for every writer. I remeber how I could see my writing style change and evolve after reading some books and being completely into their style.

Also, great note on the drawing and interviewing of the characters. Now, for me, creating a character is always a must and I need to see them physically. While I can’t draw – I only do fashion draws – I statred to use TheSims4 and all create a sim mods to create my characters and finally visualize them. And interviews are always useful, because sometimes we start with a character we truly love but it’s possibile that love isn’t enough, when there’s no susbatnce behind them

    1. Yes that’s so true! Reading can really help to shape and inspire your writing. I’ve always been an avid reader!

That makes sense, I love the idea of using SIMS! What a creative way of seeing your characters and visualising them – I bet it really helps your characters have substance and descriptive detail, too. Thank you for reading x
