15 Reasons to Start Your Own Blog

A few years ago I made the decision to start my own blog, and it was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. And since I started focusing on my blog back in May 2020 I really feel like I’ve come in to my own with it.

Starting a blog isn’t for everyone, but it’s such a fantastic hobby or pursuit to try if you’re looking for a place to vent, want to join a supportive community, or you’re looking to improve your skills during a time of uncertainty.

Whether you’ve thought about starting your own blog before, or you’re currently a blogger looking to find out a few positives from a fellow blogger, starting your own blog is such a rewarding, enjoyable, and helpful experience with lots of benefits.

Below, find 15 reasons to start your own blog, and why blogging is such a fantastic thing to do!

1. Get that CV glowing

Growing your blog and social media looks great on your CV if you’re applying for any jobs in social media, writing, marketing, and a range of other great careers. If you’re currently trying to find work experience, make the opportunities for yourself and try starting your own blog.

2. Improve your IT skills

I’m still not the best at the technical side of blogging- but blogging has definitely improved my IT skills. It’s a great way to get computer literate and understand how to interact online.

3. It’s fun!

Blogging is fun! If you’re thinking about starting your own blog, this is the only factor that should matter- and if you think you would enjoy writing and creating a blog it’s the perfect reason to start your own.

4. The community

I love the blogging community, and it’s one of the best reasons to start your own blog. It’s fantastic to find a supportive community of people who love the same things as you, and I love connecting with other bloggers.

5. It keeps you productive

Blogging is a productive hobby, and if you’re looking for something to do which is fun but still keeps you busy and feeling productive- blogging is the way to go!

6. Improve your writing

Improving your writing is the perfect reason to start your own blog. I really feel like I have grown as a writer since I started blogging- and if I ever want to write for other publications I can use the writing on my blog as a sample of my work.

7. It’s always there

Once you create a blog, it’s always there whenever you want to use it. Once you’ve sorted out the basics of creating your blog, you can come and go with it when you choose- and it’s great to know that it’s there whenever you fancy using it.

8. Get social

Social media isn’t for everyone, but a great reason to start your own blog is the access to social media. I’ve found a great community of people on social media, and it’s a great way to promote your blog.

9. It can reveal other interests

For me, blogging has shown me that I want to pursue a career in writing, or look into freelance work- with the ultimate dream to focus on my blog full-time.

Once you start writing your blog, you might realise you love social media management, you want to be a writer, or you want to write your own ebook. Blogging is a great step to explore these interests for free.

10. It’s a distraction

Blogging has been a great distraction from the events of the world this past year, and I don’t know what I would have done in lockdown without blogging as a distraction!

11. Discuss your passions

A blog is a great place to discuss your passions. You might want to chat about mental health, discuss an upsetting time in your life, or blog about your passion for reading. Whatever you want to write about, your passions are a great reason to start your own blog.

12. Stay relevant

Throughout the pandemic, a blog has helped me stay relevant and understand the problems affecting everyone in the world. I love using a blog to stay relevant and chat about important subjects, and social media is one of the main places people are finding out about current events- for better or worse!

13. Improve your photography

I’m not into photography, but if you enjoy taking photos a blog is a great place to showcase your work and improve your photography skills.

14. Make a bit of money

Blogging is a fantastic hobby, but if you’re interested in making a bit of extra money, a blog and online presence is a great place to start.

It takes a lot of work to get to a place where you can earn from your blog- but if it’s something you think you would enjoy it’s a fantastic reason to start your own blog and get started earning a little extra!

15. Find a place to vent

A blog is a great place to vent and express yourself- and talk about whatever might be on your mind! If you have something you’re working through, or you just want to practice writing about an important subject, then that’s a great reason to start your own blog.

If you have lots of life responsibilities such as work, children, or other obligations- blogging can be a much-needed break and a great place to turn to.

  5. I already have a blog but what you’ve listed is definitely true. I’ve become more confident with some of the tech behind having a blog – although I still outsource some of it! But also with social media and marketing I’m a lot more fluent. Plus my writing and editing has got better as well. The community online is also amazing and super supportive

  10. Hi Eleanor,

Those are some great reasons to start a blog.

I started mine as a fun way to share my knowledge and experience with other people; to be both informative and entertaining. It was an added bonus to be able to increase my IT skills and to meet so many great people doing similar things.

  11. I agree with all these reasons. I initially started as a way to vent about my fertility issues and once my little girl came a long, it definitely became more of a break from my work-from-home job. My IT skills have definitely improved a little too 😁
