My Top 5 Autumn Comfort Foods

As the weather starts to change, we all start to crave comfort food!

I love Summer, but after the incredibly high temperatures this year – I have to say that a part of me is looking forward to cosy Autumn nights in.

A big part of that is enjoying some of my favourite Autumn comfort foods!

When the weather is warm, my body craves salads – and my appetite has only been able to manage small portions. However, now that we’re heading towards cooler weather, I’m ready for those big portion sizes again.

In this blog post, I’ve put together my top 5 Autumn comfort foods – I’d love to hear yours in the comments!

1. Cinnamon Buns

Last Autumn and Winter, I loved checking out the local cafés of Sheffield – and a cinnamon bun was my favourite order.

There’s something so warm and cosy about a tasty cinnamon bun, especially when it’s warm and toasty and covered in delicious icing.

I can’t wait to eat lots of cinnamon buns this year, sampling some of the sweet treats of my local independent cafés.

2. Spaghetti Bolognese

A hearty portion of spaghetti bolognese is the perfect Autumn comfort food!

During the Summer months, I normally choose lighter pasta dishes, but in Autumn and Winter, I always crave big portions of delicious pasta, tomato sauce and beef.

You can make a vegetarian bolognese or pile in lots of minced beef for a quick iron fix! My boyfriend has also taught me how to make the perfect lasagne, so I’ll be enjoying this meal in the Autumn months, too.

3. Sausage Casserole

When I lived at home with my parents, sausage casserole was always a staple in the Autumn and Winter months.

Whether you choose to use pork sausages, turkey sausages or vegetarian/vegan substitutes – you can throw basically anything into a sausage casserole to make a warm and comforting Autumn meal.

You can also make this Autumn meal your own by adding spice, subbing the sausages for vegetables or pairing the dish with rice, bread and other sides.

4. Toasties

I love making toasties in the Autumn months! You can fill a toastie with pretty much anything, such as cheese, tuna, tomatoes, bacon, ham or beans.

In Summer I always favour cold sandwiches, so when Autumn rolls around I love making hot toasties for lunch when I’m working from home to warm me up!

5. Sunday Dinner

For many people in the UK, Sunday dinner is right at the top of the Autumn comfort food list.

I don’t normally make a Sunday dinner for myself, so this comforting meal reminds me of when I used to live with my parents.

Whether this is because it reminds me of weekends at home, or because it’s a hearty warm dish, a Sunday dinner is a delicious choice for your next Autumn meal.

  1. I’m loving all the Autumnal content I’m seeing already! It’s getting me so in the mood for this new season – just hope the weather actually gets the memo haha! I love a cinnamon swirl, they’re definitely great Autumn food. My top Autumn food is stew and dumplings. My mum makes the BEST stew and dumplings and tbf, I could eat it in the dead of Summer but I haven’t had it in months.

    1. Thank you Jenny! I agree, normally I am sad to leave the Summer behind (and I am a bit) but after the super warm weather, I’m ready to get my jumpers and warm outfits out too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, there are so many hearty meals to look forward to x

  2. I’m from the Caribbean so we don’t have Autumn season here, but during your colder months, it’s usually rainy season here so all the warm cosy meals are welcomed. I love cinnamon rolls. It’s so tasty and smells awesome. Eating any spaghetti dish is yummy, but bolognese is an awesome way to go. I love a good soup, especially on a really rainy day.

  3. My kids absolutely adore eating warm cinnamon roles on a cold snow day. They wake up and bolt down the stairs to enjoy them! Around dinner time on Sundays we get into our gray Rolls Royce and head to Grandmas to enjoy her DELICIOUS Sunday dinner.

  4. I really like your autumn foods. I would totally say that cinnamon buns are my favorite autumn comfort food. It is just so good to me. You definitely should have warm and cozy foods during the autumn time. One food I think you should add is potato leek soup. I love it so much. I really thinks it gives great comfort.
