4 Foreign-Language Shows I Love

As a recent languages graduate, I’m always on the lookout for great foreign-language TV shows or films to enjoy.

I love knowing that there are fun, enjoyable ways to keep up my French.

Foreign-language shows or films can be a very interesting insight into another culture and language.

There are so many TV shows I love to watch to keep up my language skills- and even a few in other languages that I really enjoy, too.

I think watching a show in a different language (with subtitles, of course) can really help to immerse you in another culture.

I’ve learned so much about France and the French lifestyle simply by watching a few interesting shows.

In this blog post, I’ve put together 4 foreign-language shows I love. I’d love to hear all your suggestions in the comments!

1. ‘Call My Agent’

My favourite French show has to be ‘Call My Agent‘.

It’s all about a French acting agency, where agents help French stars with anything they require- from baby-sitting to sorting out contracts.

This show has got a fantastic mixture of Paris glamour and realistic characters that make it a fun and exciting watch.

I really recommend giving this one a try if you’re interested in French film culture, and if you want to find characters that are funny and relatable.

2. ‘The Hook-Up Plan’

This is another French show that’s bound to make you laugh!

Focusing on one girl’s plan to get her best friend a boyfriend, this show is full of funny characters and amazing female friendships.

I love all the funny and crazy situations the characters get themselves into, and it’s a fantastic show to pick up some Parisian slang words.

3. ‘Valeria’

Originally in Spanish, this is another show full of fun storylines and close female friendships.

I’ve not watched all of this series yet, but I love the variety of characters, and it’s a very sex-positive, open show.

4. ‘A Very Secret Service’

I love this show on Netflix, and it’s the perfect mixture of comedy, history and action!

All about the French secret service after the Second World War, this show is full of glamorous female characters, political intrigue and thrilling action.

It’s funny and silly- and I really recommend watching it for strange jokes and crazy plotlines.

  8. These shows sound fun and interesting – adding all these to my list. I really love K-dramas, my fave is a love story between a North Korean soldier and a South Korean socialite (Crash Landing on You).

  9. Need to check out those french ones to try keep up my french too, but I think it’s a lost cause haha! I used to have loads of French films on DVD but I got rid of them all when moving!

  12. Truth is I have left my French behind lately and this was a post that I actually kept notes of your suggestions. Only Valeria I have watched and enjoyed (haha and it is in Spanish).
    I will check the rest for sure.
    I would suggest you to check Lupin which is a french mystery series if you are fond of mystery.

  13. To be honest, I haven’t heard of any of these movies before lol. Lately, I have been watching more of English movies but it’s time to spice things up I guess. The hookup plan sounds like a nice one. I’ll check all of them out.

  14. Thanks for this list, I really wanna watch some more foreign language tv shows. I watched a k drama last year that I was OBSESSED with called ‘Crash Landing On You’ which I would highly recommend. It’s a bit crazy but I had a fun time!

  17. These sound good! I used to be fluent in French as I minored in it in college but I haven’t used it in so long that I don’t really know it so well anymore. Maybe I should watch some of these shows to refresh my skills! My favorite Foreign Film is L’Auberge D’espagnole. 🙂

  20. I’ve been contemplating starting The Hook-Up Plan and now I’m officially convinced. Fun fact: Valeria and Valentina are my “alter ego” names so I DEF have to check Valeria out.
