Today I thought I would write a review of ‘Emily in Paris’, the new 10-part Netflix series that everyone is talking about!
‘Emily in Paris’ focuses on Emily Cooper, a young American girl who is given the chance to work for a marketing firm in the heart of Paris. She travels to Paris with high hopes that she can help the marketing firm with their social media strategy and branding.
When Emily leaves Chicago, she leaves a life, a job, and her boyfriend behind. But she yearns for something more, and as she enters Paris she’s excited to meet new people and experience new things.
I found this series funny and interesting to watch. I liked the glamour and glitz of it all- and I liked that Emily lived this charmed life that was amazing to watch- even if it was incredibly unrealistic and very stereotypical. She was always perfectly made up, wearing the most glamorous outfits, and getting the chance to work with sophisticated and famous French brands.
Even when things weren’t going well for Emily, everything was shot through a positive, perfect, charmed light.
This was both a positive and a negative. On the one hand, it is fun to watch as it keeps everything light-hearted, warm, and cosy. But on the other hand, this is certainly not an honest or realistic representation of what it’s like to leave everyone behind and move to a new country, and culture shock definitely does not look like this!
But this was half the fun of the series, and I enjoyed watching as Emily experienced everything Paris had to offer- posting it all on her Instagram page in true American style. And the clothes Emily wears are just incredible, I want every single one of them- even if some of them are a little extravagant and over the top. Lily Collins is unbelievably beautiful, and she’s the perfect fit for the role of Emily.
I enjoyed watching Emily struggle with the French language and culture- making simple mistakes because she doesn’t speak French. As someone who can speak French, I enjoyed seeing how an American dealt with the culture shock of going from Chicago to the centre of Paris. The stereotypes of French culture, however, were very cringey to watch at times.
Emily can’t help but come across as arrogant and annoying in her search to put French brands on the map, getting in the way of her French clients and her sophisticated, chic boss, Sylvie.
I also really liked the gender relations shown in this show. This series shows the difference between American and French gender relations, and hints at the “sex-obsessed” nature of the French. I also loved Emily’s friendships throughout the show, and how she deals with French male attention as she builds relationships, friendships, and a new life.
Overall this was a light-hearted series that didn’t take itself too seriously, and it was fun and easy-to-watch. In terms of storyline, not a whole lot happened- but that didn’t really matter to me as I enjoyed the feel of the show.
The series is also not a realistic representation of culture shock or moving abroad, and definitely overdoes the French stereotypes! But I loved the outfits, the settings, and experiencing French culture through Emily’s eyes- and if a second series comes out I’ll enjoy getting back into Emily’s charmed, unrealistic Parisian life.
