Today I thought I’d do a review of Conan Gray‘s latest album ‘Kid Krow’ as this album came out a few weeks ago and I’ve been listening to it a lot since the UK entered lockdown over three weeks ago.
I discovered Conan’s music this time last year when I was studying for my second year exams and this was a really good time in my life- and so for me his music always whisks me back to that time. So when I found out that his new album had come out, I was excited to hear more!
‘Kid Krow’ features 12 songs, and Conan’s music speaks of troubled young people, expressing sentiments that many people may be feeling. And this new album is not an exception, the songs on this album discussing relationships, unrequited love and the insecurities felt by young people everyday.
My favourite song on this album is ‘Heather’ as it is so soft and melodic. I also really enjoyed the song ‘Affluenza’ which explores class issues with a mocking, sarcastic tone.
“Why would you ever kiss me?
I’m not even half, as pretty”
I also like this album because it has a mixture of soft, mellow songs, but also more upbeat ones. For example, the song ‘Maniac’ is great and I can always count on this song to lift me out of a bad mood. ‘Checkmate’ is equally more upbeat in tone.
As well as Conan’s album, I also discovered Alec Benjamin’s new song a few days ago, brought out amid the coronavirus pandemic.
I feel incredibly lucky to have my family during this difficult time. Everyone is experiencing their own stress, anxiety and pain during this difficult time, and when I heard Alec’s song ‘Six Feet Apart’ I really felt like it expressed what many people are feeling during this time.
“And it hurts to know just how lovely you are
And be too far away to hold, but close enough to break my heart”
This song speaks about missing those you love, about being temptingly close to people, and yet not being able to see who you wish or do what you want, and I find his words really touching. Perhaps not the best one to listen to if you’re wanting a bit of escapism though.
What are you listening to during the pandemic? Have you checked out Conan’s new album? Who’s your favourite artist this year?
