My Thoughts on ‘Folklore’ by Taylor Swift

Almost a week ago, Taylor Swift made the surprise announcement that she was going to release a new album at midnight, and everyone was suddenly very excited- including me!

I am a huge Taylor Swift fan, and after watching her documentary “Miss Americana” earlier this year, my love for her has only increased. So when I heard she had a new album out, I was excited to hear it and share all my thoughts on “Folklore”.

And this album did not disappoint. “Folklore” transported me right back to where Taylor Swift began, with so many slow, melancholic, and beautiful songs.

I liked that a lot of these songs had a country feel to them, such as “The Last Great American Dynasty”, which told the story of a scandalous woman, Rebekah, and her exploits after the death of her husband.

I read that the songs “August”, “Cardigan”, and “Betty” are all linked, with each chronicling different points of view of a relationship gone wrong. I thought this was such an interesting, clever idea- and it’s so amazing to spot the crossover between the songs. Taylor Swift is a brilliantly clever artist, and I think it’s brilliant that she spent her time in lockdown creating such beautiful songs.

I think my favourite track on the album is “Betty”. It’s such a melodic, beautiful song, and Taylor Swift really does have a way with words. The lyrics of this song are beautiful and melancholic, reminiscing about the mistakes made during a relationship, and the desperation the narrator has to be given one last chance. This song reminded me of “Heather” by Conan Gray, wistful in its tone.

“August” and “This is me Trying” are also fantastic songs, and Taylor’s songs always seem to be relatable, expressing sentiments that seem so real and true. She uses her songs to express raw emotions, and the result is beautiful songs.

All the songs included on this album are haunting, beautiful, and soft. They stay with you, and each one has such a mystical feel to it. I think it’s great that Taylor has such a range of musical style, and this album really saw a return to more melodic songs- about love, about loss, and about heartbreak.

This is the perfect album to listen to if you want to curl up with a book, or if you want some music to chill to before bed.

  2. I LOVE the folklore album! Red is my all time fave, but folklore is giving it a run for its money. Taylor is such an incredible writer and her storytelling is so beautiful. I love Betty too, but I think the 1 and peace are my current favourites. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I love posts like this! I was thinking of writing my thoughts on this album too! x

  4. I tried giving this album a go the other day in the car. I’m such a huge Taylor fan and so is my husband but he “wasn’t feeling” this album. He was upset there wasn’t any upbeat songs like in her previous album. I think he’s seem to had forgotten where Taylor started. As much as I love her upbeat songs I also love her no so upbeat ones as well! I may give this another go by myself sometime soon lol
