6 Tips to Improve Your Focus – A Work-From-Home Guide

AD – This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Focus is a tricky thing. It can come and go with no rhyme or reason – and staying focused while you work from home is no easy feat.

However, there are a few things you can do to avoid distractions and improve your productivity at home, whether you’re a remote worker or a freelancer like me.

How to improve your focus if you work from home

Let’s take a look at 6 tips to improve your focus – a work-from-home guide!

1. Use the Pomodoro technique

I love using the Pomodoro technique when I’m finding it hard to focus. Here’s how you do it:

  • Pick a task
  • Set a timer for 25 minutes
  • Work on your task until the timer goes off
  • Take a 5-minute break
  • Repeat

You can alter your timings, depending on what you need. If you prefer to do longer stints of work, try setting your timer for 45 minutes. It’s all about making the method work for you.

This is a great way to get into the zone! You can ensure you get through all your tasks while taking enough breaks to stay focused.

Try to avoid distractions during your Pomodoro sessions. You could tell yourself you won’t check social media until you’ve finished, for example, or treat yourself to a snack at the end of the session.

2. Try coworking

Coworking is one of my favourite ways to stay focused. Seeing other people work hard – either online or in person – can encourage you to focus on your own tasks.

Similar to body doubling, working alongside another person (or people) can help you feel supported in your work, especially if you’re finding it hard to get started. Set intentions with your friends to stay accountable.

Working out of the house – in a café, for example – can also help to improve your productivity. I find it refreshing to work in a different environment. It brings new inspiration and creativity when I’m feeling a bit stuck.

3. Break up big tasks

Sometimes, a lack of focus comes from overwhelm. You might not know where to start with your to-do list or you might feel paralysed by decision anxiety.

Break up your big tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks. This can help you feel more in control and you won’t feel like you have to complete everything at once.

Once you finish a chunk of work, reward yourself with a break. This will help you keep going for longer stretches of time – and you can stay focused on the task in hand.

4. Create a to-do list

If you’re finding it hard to stay focused, your first task is to create a to-do list. Write down a list of things that need to get done by the end of the day or create a full timetable for yourself.

This will give you direction and focus for the day. You’ll know which tasks to prioritise and how long it will take to complete all your work.

I like to write down the next day’s to-do list at the end of each day. This means I know exactly what to do when I sit down to work in the morning.

5. Get enough sleep

Focus starts with sleep! You need to get enough sleep if you want to improve your focus and stay productive throughout the day.

As well as getting enough sleep, it’s also important to stay hydrated, avoid high-sugar snacks and reduce stress to stay focused.

Whether you’re a remote translator or freelance writer, you need to take the time to look after your physical and mental health.

Take regular time off, eat healthy and get enough sleep each night. It will make you feel more productive and help you reach your goals.

6. Don’t beat yourself up!

Everyone works differently. You might focus better in the morning or you might prefer to work into the night. The best way for you to focus might be different to your colleague – and that’s okay.

Lean into exactly what you and your brain need. Don’t beat yourself up if you organise your time in a different way to other people.

To stay focused, you need to learn what works best for you. Take your time to build up a good routine – and always remember to take regular breaks.
