In 2017, I made the decision to start my own blog – and it was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Starting a blog isn’t for everyone, but it’s such a fantastic hobby to try out if you’re looking for a place to vent, want to join a supportive community or fancy improving your writing.
In this blog post, I’ve put together 15 reasons to start your own blog – including all my top tips
1. Get that CV glowing
Growing your blog and social media looks good on your CV if you’re applying for jobs in social media, writing, marketing and a range of other careers.
If you’re currently trying to find work experience, make opportunities for yourself by starting your own blog.
2. Improve your IT skills
I’m still not the best at the technical side of blogging – but blogging has definitely improved my IT skills. It’s a great way to get computer literate and understand how to interact online.
3. It’s fun
Blogging is fun! If you’re thinking about starting your own blog, this is the only thing that matters. A blog is a fantastic place to practice your writing and connect with other people.
4. The blogging community
I love the blogging community. You can find a supportive and loyal readership of people online who love the same things as you – and I love chatting with other bloggers.
5. It keeps you productive
Blogging is a productive hobby – and it can be exciting to find ways to grow your blog once you get started. If you’re looking for something that’s fun but still keeps you busy, blogging is the way to go!
6. Improve your writing
Improving your writing is the perfect reason to start your own blog. I’ve grown as a writer since I started blogging – and I can use the posts on my blog as a sample of my work.

If you want to learn more about growing your blog, check out my blog writing ebook – updated and improved for 2024.
7. Your blog is always there
Once you create a blog, it’s always there – you can come and go as you choose. It’s great to know that your blog is there whenever you fancy doing a bit of writing.
8. Get social
Social media is a fun way to promote your blog and meet new people – and I’ve found a lovely community on Twitter (X).
9. It can reveal other interests
For me, blogging showed me that I wanted to pursue a career in writing and look into freelance content work.
Once you start writing for your blog, you might realise you love social media management, you might want to be a writer, or you might decide to write your own ebook.
Blogging can help you explore these interests for free!
10. It’s a great distraction
For me, blogging was a distraction from the events of the world during the pandemic. I don’t know what I would have done in lockdown without blogging and writing.
11. Discuss your passions
A blog is a brilliant place to discuss your passions. You might want to chat about mental health, discuss an upsetting time in your life, or blog about your passion for reading.
12. Stay relevant
Throughout the pandemic, my blog helped me stay relevant and understand the problems affecting everyone in the world – and I love discussing important subjects for bloggers and freelancers on my site.
13. Improve your photography
I’m not into photography, but if you enjoy taking photos, a blog is a great place to showcase visual content and improve your skills.

You can also find inspiration from other writers and creatives, helping to develop your skills and understand how to use your content to make an impact.
14. You can make a bit of money from your blog
Blogging is a fantastic hobby, but if you’re interested in making a bit of extra money online, a blog is a good place to start!
It takes a lot of work to get to a place where you can earn from your blog. However, there are some great sponsored post opportunities out there for bloggers on sites like Get Blogged.
15. A place to vent
A blog is a place to vent and express yourself – and you can talk about whatever might be on your mind.
If you have something you’re working through, or you just want to practice writing about an important subject, then that’s a great reason to start your own blog.
Why did you start your blog? Are there any other reasons you would add to my list? Have you ever thought about starting your own blog?
Let me know all your thoughts in the comments below 🙂

I already have a blog but what you’ve listed is definitely true. I’ve become more confident with some of the tech behind having a blog – although I still outsource some of it! But also with social media and marketing I’m a lot more fluent. Plus my writing and editing has got better as well. The community online is also amazing and super supportive

I started mine as a fun way to share my knowledge and experience with other people; to be both informative and entertaining. It was an added bonus to be able to increase my IT skills and to meet so many great people doing similar things.
