10 Healthy Snack Swaps to Try Out

I’ve started working freelance full-time, which means I’m spending a lot more time at home- and that means I’m doing a lot more snacking!

Sometimes I don’t have the best self-control when it comes to food. I’ve really had to think about the snacks I want to eat during my work day, and how I can eat simple and healthy foods that actually fill me up.

There’s nothing wrong with eating unhealthy snacks- and I’m definitely not one to tell you what you should and shouldn’t eat. However, I love checking out new healthy snack ideas.

In this post, I’ve put together 10 healthy snack swaps to try!

Corncakes and peanut butter

I love ricecakes and corncakes, but they aren’t the most filling snack choice. Try adding a bit of peanut butter to make this snack choice a bit more substantial.

Peanut butter has lots of protein benefits that can contribute to a healthy and balanced diet. It’s a great vegan option, too.

Cereal

Since working at home, I’ve been able to experiment with new breakfast ideas– and I’ve really enjoyed eating a bit more cereal.

This healthy snack often comes packed full of fibre and some of it is even fortified with vitamins such as iron.

Of course, some cereal can be quite sugary, but I’ve enjoyed trying out different breakfast foods to keep me full and productive during the morning.

Vegetables and hummus

I hate vegetables like broccoli and peas, so I try to get all of my vitamins from salad and vegetables like peppers, cucumbers and carrots.

Hummus and peppers is a great healthy snack option. I also love to dip breadsticks in hummus or guacamole to create a healthy and tasty snack. Hummus is made from chickpeas which are a great source of protein, too.

Wholegrain toast

I’ve recently tried to swap out my white bread for brown or wholegrain options. A couple of slices of wholegrain toast is a filling and tasty afternoon snack while I work from home.

Don’t get me wrong, you can’t beat white bread- but it’s no surprise that it’s not always the healthiest option!

Wholegrain toast also makes a great breakfast idea if you need something substantial to start off your day.

Grapes

I always gravitate towards sweet options when it comes to unhealthy snacks, but you can often find a healthy alternative to your favourite sweet treats.

Munching on a few fresh grapes has helped me curb my sugar addiction. This can be substituted depending on your favourite fruit. It’s a great sweet option to take to work too, if you’re working in the office.

Lentil chips

Swap out a packet of crisps for some lentil chips!

They are slightly more filling than ordinary crisps, and you can enjoy them with hummus or other dips. You can also get a few different flavours, such as chilli or sundried tomato.

Edamame beans

Edamame beans are a great, healthy snack swap, as they are full of protein and fibre. I love a handful of these beans, and they are a great option if you’re following a plant-based diet, too.

My parents actually gave me a packet of these beans when I started working from home, as they are a healthy snack option that lasts a while in the cupboard.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a great healthy snack swap to try out, as it is packed full of calcium and probiotics.

This delicious snack option is also great for your stomach. I don’t drink much milk, so I like to think it gives me the vitamins I need to keep my bones nice and strong. You could try a yogurt drink like Actimel or a few scoops of plain yogurt with fruit.

Popcorn

I love popcorn! It’s not the most filling snack, but it’s full of fibre and it’s a healthy snack swap as long as you don’t load it with salt or sugar.

Bags of popcorn are relatively cheap, and they last in the cupboard for ages. You could add a bit of salt or sugar yourself, as you’ll know how much has been added.

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate is a great healthy snack swap for milk or white chocolate. It’s not the healthiest option, but it has more health benefits than other chocolate- and it could help to curb any cravings.

Dark chocolate has less sugar, and it even contains some iron. It’s is also very rich, so you can easily swap it out and eat just a little bit to feel full.

Do you have any healthy snack swap ideas for me to try out? What do you like to eat while you work from home? What do you think of my healthy snap swaps?

Let me know what you think in the comments below 🙂

  1. Great ideas. I’m so bad with snacking when working from home, so like you try to find healthier options, although regular crisps and chocolate are just too tempting sometimes…. I love hummus as a snack option, especially if what you’re dipping requires little to no prep.

  2. As a fellow freelancer and homeworker I know exactly what you mean about snacking! Carrots and hummus, and peanut butter on wholemeal are a couple of my go-tos as well. I also find anything protein based fills me up for a lot longer 🙂

  5. This is a great list of healthy snacks! I work from home at the moment so I agree it is very easy to head towards snacks that are not the best for our bodies, however I am quite lucky that I am not a huge chocolate person. I am more of a crisp person though so that is my downfall. But these a great I will be adding some of these into my life xx

    1. It can be so hard! That’s great though, I do have a bit of a sweet tooth I have to admit haha 🙂 it’s definitely okay to treat yourself to crisps (after all, you’re working hard) but I’m glad this post helped you too!
