6 Unique Ways to Celebrate Christmas as a Freelancer

AD – This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

As a freelancer or remote worker, you don’t get the same Christmas celebrations as someone in a “traditional” job. You might not get a Christmas party – and you miss out on some of those fun Christmas perks.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Christmas! You just need to find unique ways to celebrate – by yourself or with friends, family and fellow freelancers.

In this blog post, I’ve put together 6 unique ways to celebrate Christmas as a freelancer

There are lots of ways to celebrate Christmas or New Year as a freelancer, including:

  1. Go to a freelance event
  2. Take yourself out for a meal
  3. Watch a Christmas film
  4. Celebrate with friends and family
  5. Arrange a Christmas party
  6. Take time off

Let’s dive into each of these celebration ideas in a bit more detail…

1. Go to a freelance event

Many freelance groups organise Christmas events for freelancers or remote workers, giving people who work from home a chance to get out and mark the end of the year!

Freelancer Magazine arranges a huge freelance Christmas celebration in London every year, bringing together people who only usually meet on Zoom or LinkedIn.

However, this isn’t the only Christmas party out there! You could join a freelance coworking space to celebrate with people or check out events online.

2. Take yourself out for a meal

It might sound strange, but it’s important to celebrate the end of the year as a freelancer – and taking yourself out for a meal is a great way to do that.

I like to give myself an appraisal at the end of the year, tracking my goals and understanding how I can meet them. You could take yourself out for lunch while you complete your appraisal, or invite friends for a special Christmas treat.

As a freelancer, everything falls on you – and you’re your own boss. If you were working in a traditional job, your boss might take you out for food or drinks at the end of the year – so why not do that for yourself?

3. Watch a Christmas film while you work

Last year was my first year as a full-time freelancer, and I really didn’t anticipate how quiet it would be in December. So when I didn’t have client work to do, I did a bit of blogging in front of the TV.

Pop on a Christmas film to get into the festive spirit, or plan an afternoon off to get into all your favourite Christmas movies.

4. Celebrate with friends and family

As the year comes to an end, don’t forget to celebrate your ups and downs with friends and family! There are lots of ways to celebrate Christmas with loved ones, including:

  • Go out for a meal
  • Host a Christmas movie marathon
  • Put up your Christmas tree
  • Visit your local Christmas markets
  • Go out for drinks

Just because you work for yourself, it doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate the past year with other people. These are the people who help and support you throughout the year – so it’s only right that you should celebrate with them, too.

5. Arrange your own party

This Christmas, why not arrange your own freelance party? You could organise a one-to-one meet-up with a freelancer friend, or get lots of freelancers together for a fun celebration.

Arranging your own party gives you a chance to do whatever you want. You could schedule a fun Christmas activity, such as a Christmas-themed quiz, or just get everyone together for a couple of drinks. It’s up to you!

If you don’t fancy going out for your Christmas celebration, you could organise a festive event for other freelancers on Zoom.

6. Take time off

For me, December tends to be a pretty quiet month. Clients are busy tying everything up for the end of the year – or taking time off themselves.

So if you’re quiet, why not take some time off? It’s the end of the year and you deserve to rest and relax after a busy year of work.

You could even use your time off to do something Christmassy, like visit your local Christmas markets or buy some last-minute Christmas presents for your loved ones.
