I recently read Lauren Graham’s autobiography and as a massive ‘Gilmore Girls’ fan I thought I would write a review of ‘Talking as Fast as I Can’.
I don’t normally read memoirs, and non-fiction doesn’t usually interest me as much as an action-packed story. However, I love ‘Gilmore Girls‘ and as I was going through sixth form and into university, the experiences of Rory Gilmore really mirrored my own. So when I saw a book written by the actor who plays Lorelai Gilmore in the show- I knew I had to give to a go.
‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ is about Lauren Graham’s life, covering a wide-range of topics, such as her acting career and rise to the top, as well as how she picked up writing fiction while on breaks from shooting. She gives some insight into the not-so-glamorous world of Hollywood, and gives her experience of working as a well-known actor, as well as how she balances all her many passions.
I thought the way she spoke about balancing so many things was really inspiring, and certainly motivated me to try and cut down on procrastination!
Throughout the book, Lauren speaks about how she came to be an actor, and gives the reader a bit of info. on her family life, and what it was like growing up with a somewhat unconventional family. She mentions acting jobs, from her role in the series ‘Parenthood,’ to starring in commercials. However, it is Gilmore Girls that she constantly returns to, giving the reader behind the scenes info on the actors, directors and writers.
Graham goes into what the show meant to her, and how she felt when filming the reboot 10 years later. So while this was an autobiography about Lauren’s life, I guess it was just as much a biography about the show, and a memoir about her time filming it- which was what really interested me.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book! While it’s always interesting to read a book written by an actor whom you’ve come to love, it’s also fantastic to get some insight into one of your favourite TV shows.
I thought this book was written in such an honest way, and I loved the way that Lauren expressed her emotions when shooting the series, speaking about her sadness when ‘Gilmore Girls’ came to an end, and how heart-breaking it was to leave everyone for good after the reboot.
It really sounded like the cast of ‘Gilmore Girls‘ was one big family, and I loved how heartfelt everything Lauren said was. Whether she was talking about the support from the writers of the show, or her personal relationship with Alexis Bledel.
The way Lauren described Hollywood, and her previous roles, was also really interesting. I like how she suggested that, before Gilmore Girls, she had only really played a stereotypical ‘Mom’ character, or a woman who has lots of relationships and is flirty and ditzy. With the character of Lorelai Gilmore, she kind of got to embody both these characters, as well as incorporating lots of much more interesting personality features.
I also liked the comedic tone of this book. While she often commented on her emotions while filming the show, and her various ups and downs in her acting career, Lauren also used a large dose of humour to make this book interesting and accessible.
Her jokes and general humorous passages made the book what it was, and I thought she perfectly balanced serious writing about her experiences, with humorous anecdotes and pieces of gossip. Just like in ‘Gilmore Girls,’ there was a good balance of fun, banter and serious, sad moments.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I raced through it, despite not usually being as interested in non-fiction. I love the show Gilmore Girls so much, and all the little memories Lauren recounts in this book make me want to start the series all over again, even though I’ve just finished for the third time!
While I wasn’t a massive fan of ‘A Year in the Life’, I thought Lauren’s thoughts and feelings on the reboot were really heartfelt.
What do you think of my review of ‘Talking as Fast as I Can’ by Lauren Graham? Have you ever seen the series ‘Gilmore Girls’? What was your opinion of the reboot?

Ah, this boom has been on my tbr for ages! As I still don’t own it I keep forgetting about it, but I’ve also been a huge fan of GG and Lauren ever since about middle grade, so I really want to read it. I was afraid, though, that this book maybe can’t live up to the hype or to the series and what I think of LG. Thanks for this great review! 😘 Now I’m sure I’ll read it sometime.

I hope you really enjoy it if you ever get round to it, although I understand the fact that it might not be as good as you want it to be because of the hype ❤️

The tone of this book was my favorite part–Graham was just having a conversation with her reader, and it made it a light and fun read. Have you read Someday, Someday, Maybe? Another great book by her, but completely different (this one’s a novel)!

I definitely want to get this book! It sounds so good!
I am such a fan of hers from Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. I actually was suppose to see her on Broadway years ago in Guys and Dolls, but the show closed before I was suppose to see it.
I actually started watching Gilmore Girls around season 4 when it was still playing on TV. Back than Netflix didn’t exist yet so I couldn’t start it from season 1 instead. That’s why I still haven’t watched the reboot yet. At some point hoping to start the series from season 1 to the reboot. So many episodes so I haven’t started that yet.

Oh yes, Parenthood is a must watch! Really wonderfully done series! Definite recommend!
Currently watching Grey’s Anatomy as my current series which I have a ton of episodes to catch up on. Maybe after I’ll go to Gilmore Girls, cause I really want to watch the reboot.
Definitely hope to read her book within the new year.

Ooh, lots of people recommend Grey’s Anatomy… I’m also huge watching Brooklyn 99 at the moment haha! I hope you enjoy it when you give it a go, the reboot is a bit of a disappointment, but still worth a watch

I forgot how much Grey’s Anatomy is such a great series. I fell behind on it after season 5 when I was still watching it on TV. I just finished season 6 a few days ago. Definite recommend for a great series to watch.
Omg, I love Brooklyn 99! I was so happy NBC picked it up after FOX surprisingly cancelled it. Can’t wait for the new season in January to start.
I’ve heard that about the reboot. I really want to watch that musical episode they did. I am a huge Theater Dork, and I heard Sutton Foster and Christian Borle are in an episode. So I can’t wait to watch that episode once I get to the reboot.
