‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ by Lauren Graham

This year marks the 25th anniversary of ‘Gilmore Girls’, so it only felt fitting to repost my review of Lauren Graham’s autobiography ‘Talking As Fast As I Can.’

It’s a funny, inspiring and illuminating look at the world of Hollywood and Graham’s rise to fame, with anecdotes and behind-the-scenes moments about her time in TV.

Synopsis: ‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ by Lauren Graham

‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ is Lauren Graham’s memoir and first non-fiction book. It follows her acting career – and looks at how she picked up writing fiction while on breaks from shooting.

She discusses how she balances acting with her other many passions, giving the reader insight into her family life and what it was like to grow up in a somewhat unconventional family.

She looks back on all of her acting jobs, from her role in the series ‘Parenthood’ to starring in commercials. However, it is ‘Gilmore Girls’ that she constantly returns to, giving the reader a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the show.

Graham goes into exactly what the show meant to her, and how she felt when filming the reboot 10 years later. So, while this is certainly a book about Lauren’s life, it’s just as much a biography about ‘Gilmore Girls’.

My review of ‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ by Lauren Graham

I don’t often pick up autobiographies, but I couldn’t resist finding out more about Lauren Graham’s stellar acting career – and ‘Gilmore Girls’, of course. The book didn’t disappoint.

‘Gilmore Girls’

A large portion of ‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ covers Lauren’s time filming ‘Gilmore Girls’. How could it not, when it made up such an important part of her acting career? Lauren discusses landing the role, learning her many lines, and how sad it was when ‘Gilmore Girls’ finally ended.

The cast of ‘Gilmore Girls’ sounds like one big family, and you can feel the emotion in Lauren’s writing. From how the writers of the show supported her career to her relationship with Alexis Bledel, it all had an impact on her life.

Although I didn’t enjoy ‘A Year in the Life’, it was so interesting to find out what it felt like to see the cast and crew again. She describes the reboot almost like a big reunion, where the writers and actors got a chance to finish the show the way they wanted.

Lauren’s career

I loved Lauren’s discussion of her career before ‘Gilmore Girls’. Before the show, she only played either the stereotypical ‘Mom’ character or the flirtatious love interest.

With the character of Lorelai Gilmore, she got to embody both of these characters, creating the well-rounded mother figure that has become so synonymous with the show.

It’s great to see this insight into how Hollywood works – and how it’s got to change. ‘Gilmore Girls’ opened up opportunities for mothers to be seen as not just one thing, on screen and in real life.

Emotion, love and lots of laughs

Lauren’s memoir is full of emotional moments, but it’s funny, too. Like Lorelai Gilmore, she perfectly balances serious reflections with humorous anecdotes about her acting career.

I love the fact that Lauren has balanced so many different pursuits during her career. It really made me think about how I use my time – and how I can better focus on the things I want to do outside of work.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ by Lauren Graham. It’s a funny look at Lauren’s career, full of stories from her ‘Gilmore Girls’ days.

Whether you’re a fan or not, ‘Talking As Fast As I Can’ is the perfect read for a cosy Autumn afternoon!

  1. Ah, this boom has been on my tbr for ages! As I still don’t own it I keep forgetting about it, but I’ve also been a huge fan of GG and Lauren ever since about middle grade, so I really want to read it. I was afraid, though, that this book maybe can’t live up to the hype or to the series and what I think of LG. Thanks for this great review! 😘 Now I’m sure I’ll read it sometime.

  2. The tone of this book was my favorite part–Graham was just having a conversation with her reader, and it made it a light and fun read. Have you read Someday, Someday, Maybe? Another great book by her, but completely different (this one’s a novel)!

  3. Wonderful article!

I definitely want to get this book! It sounds so good!

I am such a fan of hers from Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. I actually was suppose to see her on Broadway years ago in Guys and Dolls, but the show closed before I was suppose to see it.

I actually started watching Gilmore Girls around season 4 when it was still playing on TV. Back than Netflix didn’t exist yet so I couldn’t start it from season 1 instead. That’s why I still haven’t watched the reboot yet. At some point hoping to start the series from season 1 to the reboot. So many episodes so I haven’t started that yet.

Currently watching Grey’s Anatomy as my current series which I have a ton of episodes to catch up on. Maybe after I’ll go to Gilmore Girls, cause I really want to watch the reboot.

Definitely hope to read her book within the new year.

      2. Ooh, lots of people recommend Grey’s Anatomy… I’m also huge watching Brooklyn 99 at the moment haha! I hope you enjoy it when you give it a go, the reboot is a bit of a disappointment, but still worth a watch

      3. I forgot how much Grey’s Anatomy is such a great series. I fell behind on it after season 5 when I was still watching it on TV. I just finished season 6 a few days ago. Definite recommend for a great series to watch.

Omg, I love Brooklyn 99! I was so happy NBC picked it up after FOX surprisingly cancelled it. Can’t wait for the new season in January to start.

I’ve heard that about the reboot. I really want to watch that musical episode they did. I am a huge Theater Dork, and I heard Sutton Foster and Christian Borle are in an episode. So I can’t wait to watch that episode once I get to the reboot.

  4. I’m definitely going to have to get this book! I thought the reboot was alright but just really hated how Rory came across in it & how it ended. x
