AD – This is a collaborative post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I don’t know about you, but my hair doesn’t deal well with the Summer months. It gets thick, messy and uncontrollable: think Monica in Friends during that trip to Barbados!
It’s important to look after your hair at any time, but in Summer, it’s crucial. You’re testing your hair with foreign holidays, hot days and bright sunshine. And all of that can take its toll.
How to look after your hair in Summer
So, how can you look after your hair in Summer? I’ve put together all my tips, including ideas for all hair types.
1. Boost your scalp health
First things first, you need to think about your scalp health. Your scalp supports healthy hair growth – and it can control how greasy or dry your hair looks in Summer.

If you don’t protect your scalp from the sun, it can become red or even burned. So, don’t forget to apply suncream and wear a hat or headscarf to keep your scalp safe.
You may also want to wear a protective hairstyle like a bun. This will cover your parting and keep your scalp cool, which can reduce hair damage during the warmer months.
2. Moisturise your hair
Your hair and skin need extra moisture and hydration during the hot Summer months. Here are some tips to add a bit of moisture to your hair:
- Rinse your hair with cold water
- Use products with moisturising properties, such as coconut oil
- Avoid heat treatment like hair straighteners or hair dryers
Make sure to choose the right shampoo for your hair type. If you have thick, dry hair, you may want to use an extra-hydrating shampoo, for example.
I like to use coconut oil in my hair while it’s still wet. This can lock in moisture and fight the frizz on humid, hot days.
3. Get regular haircuts
You need to get regular haircuts to keep your hair looking and feeling good. The right frequency for you will depend on your hair type, so speak to your hairdresser if you’re unsure.

I like to keep my hair long, so I go for a short maintenance trim every 8 to 12 weeks. If you have shorter hair, you may need to go every 6 weeks or even every month.

4. Don’t forget about UV protection
Did you know that UV rays can seriously damage your hair, as well as your skin? If you’re heading somewhere hot, use a hat or headscarf to protect your hair from the sun.
Some shampoos may even contain a UV filter to stop your hair from drying out. However, these products won’t typically protect your scalp from the sun, so you’ll still need to apply suncream!
5. Look after yourself – inside and out
What’s happening on the outside is often affected by what’s happening on the inside. If you want to improve your hair health in Summer, take a look at your diet and lifestyle habits.

Make sure to get enough sleep, reduce stress and eat plenty of omega-3 fatty acids to keep your hair looking healthy this Summer!

Happy reading x
I have very thick curly hair that is quite dry and turns into a pile of frizz during the summer; humidity plays havoc with it! I like the idea of finding products with coconut oil in it, I think I will look for shampoo and conditioner that have that in it as I think that would help. Thanks for the tips!

My hair is exactly the same! I really recommend combing some coconut oil through your hair after washing. You only need a bit, but it does wonders for locking in moisture 🙂 thanks for commenting x
