6 Summer Activities For Readers and Writers

AD – This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Reading and writing are two of my favourite things to do – and they often go hand-in-hand. There’s nothing like getting into a good book or getting my thoughts down on the page.

I love finding new ways to enjoy my writing and reading, whether that’s meeting up with other book lovers or attending a writing class to improve my skills.

In this blog post, I’ve put together 6 Summer activities for readers and writers, including easy and budget-friendly ways to enjoy your favourite hobbies over the Summer holidays!

6 Summer activities for readers and writers

There are lots of fun activities for readers and writers in Summer, including:

  1. Visit a literary destination
  2. Treat yourself to a new book
  3. Try out a reading challenge
  4. Go to a book club
  5. Subscribe to a new magazine
  6. Get outside

Let’s take a closer look…

1. Visit a literary destination

If you’re off for the Summer, why not visit a literary destination? There are lots of great holiday locations for book lovers and writers in the UK, including:

  • Agatha Christie’s house in Devon – you can visit for the day or stay over
  • Haworth – the home of the Brontës in Yorkshire
  • Stratford-Upon-Avon – the birthplace of Shakespeare
  • Edinburgh – there are a million and one Harry Potter-related things to see!

You could even book yourself onto a writer’s retreat. A retreat is a creative space to meet other writers and explore your writing skills in classes and workshops.

2. Treat yourself to a new book

Treat yourself to a new book over Summer. You could visit your local bookshop to browse new titles or pick up a novel from your Summer reading list.

If you’re trying to save a bit of money, get a few new reads from your local library. It’s a win/win – you can support your library and borrow a book for free.

3. Try out a reading challenge

I used to love taking part in my local library’s Summer reading challenge when I was younger, so why not create your own reading challenge?

My Mum recently shared a great adult reading challenge with me. It included tasks like reading a childhood classic or swapping a book with a friend.

You could create your own Summer challenge or follow one with others online. It’s all about finding ways to enjoy your reading and writing.

4. Go to a book club… or start your own

Get a bit of inspiration at a reading or writing club over Summer. Going to a book club is a fun Summer activity for book lovers, as you can connect with other readers or try out a few new books.

If you want to improve your writing, you could attend a writing group over Summer. You can meet other writers, discuss your passion projects and improve your writing skills.

There are lots of clubs online or in person. If your local area doesn’t have a reading or writing group that appeals to you, you could even start your own.

5. Subscribe to a new magazine

Summer is the perfect time to dip in and out of a new magazine. Whether you’re chilling on the beach or flying abroad, pick up a magazine to read and relax.

You could subscribe to a professional magazine like The Linguist Magazine or check out a magazine all about your favourite hobby.

Although I love taking a book everywhere with me, a magazine is a lighter alternative for on-the-go Summer reading.

6. Get outside

Read outside to make the most of your Summer reading time! You could read a book in your local park or write a poem on the beach.

Writing in a new environment can help to get your creative juices flowing – and you never know when inspiration is going to hit.

If you attend a book club or writing class, organise it so that you can meet outside. You can read, write and get a bit of sunshine, too.

Let me know all your thoughts in the comments below 🙂

Happy reading x

  4. I love the idea of traveling to Agatha Christie’s home. I would love to see the place where she lived. Reading outside is a nice activity. It has been a while since I have done that. Thanks for the reminder.
