5 Reasons to Make ‘The Bold Type’ Your Next Watch

‘The Bold Type’ has just come on to Netflix, and I binge-watched the whole show in just a couple of weeks.

This series is a fantastic insight into the lives of three 20-something women working for Scarlet Magazine, a sex-positive magazine based in the heart of New York.

The three women are all very different people – but they become best friends, and the show follows their lives as they navigate life at Scarlet, new relationships and key life experiences.

Sutton is from “the wrong side of the tracks” and she works as an assistant in the fast-paced Scarlet environment, trying to make ends meet.

Jane is a new staff writer, and she slowly begins to find her feet at the magazine.

Kat is the social media manager of the magazine, finding herself as the show follows her story. She uses the Scarlet social media accounts to share relevant and modern content.

‘The Bold Type’ is a very modern, relatable and interesting insight into the life of three professional women – and I really recommend giving it a try!

In this blog post, I’ve come up with 5 reasons to make ‘The Bold Type’ your next watch, including some of my favourite things about this brilliant show

Scarlet Magazine

Scarlet Magazine looks like such an amazing place to work, and I love following the characters around their exciting jobs at this magazine.

From fashion to relationships, this magazine is aimed at modern women across the country – and it aims to be at the forefront of political and social thought.

I love watching as Kat starts trends on social media, and Jane’s writing often involves trying out new dating apps or fun places to visit around the city.

This series definitely shows a sugar-coated, idealistic, glamorous view of working for a top New York magazine – but this is one of the reasons to make ‘The Bold Type’ your next watch!

Sex-Positive Storylines

‘The Bold Type’ is full of current, sex-positive storylines about everything from exploring your sexuality to chatting about sex toys.

It’s great to watch a show that openly discusses these topics. It portrays an honest representation of the characters’ sex lives and relationships.

This is definitely an important reason to make ‘The Bold Type’ your next watch as it asks important and refreshingly modern questions.

It’s great to understand the ups and downs of modern life. I also love the body and skin-positive storylines, and the women try to challenge beauty norms.

Strong Female Characters

This show is packed full of female characters, and I love that!

There are the three main young women, navigating their way through life together – but then there are also so many interesting characters around them.

There’s Jacqueline, the editor of the magazine and an amazing character. She inspires the writers, getting involved in the lives of her staff to create a formidable and caring character.

Adena, Kat’s friend, is another regular character – and she constantly stands up for her principles, even when times get tough.

I loved the elements of female friendship throughout this show, and the bond between Jane, Sutton and Kat is unbreakable.

They go through good and bad times together, all while prioritising their friendship over relationships and petty arguments.

Moral Dilemmas

I love a good moral dilemma in a show – and this one is full of big questions and issues.

It’s so touching to watch as the women deal with cheating, break-ups, grief, miscarriage, having children, arguments and discrimination.

I love to really get into a show, understanding the characters and their points of view.

‘The Bold Type’ lets the viewer follow the moral dilemmas and big questions of the characters, showing their journey through a very important time in their life.

It considers the big questions that come in your 20s and 30s.

The Fashion

If nothing else, the fashion in this show is reason enough to make ‘The Bold Type’ your next watch!

I love seeing Jane’s weird and wonderful outfits, and the fashion department of the magazine is full of exciting and glitzy events that take the characters to amazing places all across the world.

This show definitely makes it seem very glamorous to work for a magazine in New York. I’m not sure how true this is, but I definitely want to work for Scarlet now!
