At the end of last year, I read ‘Pages For You’ by Sylvia Brownrigg – a book that was just so beautifully written, evoking emotions that really jumped off the page.
I’ve put together all my thoughts on Sylvia Brownrigg’s novel, including what happens and my honest thoughts on the characters.
‘Pages For You’ by Sylvia Brownrigg: Synopsis
‘Pages For You’ follows a young woman, Flannery, as she starts her college journey. She is naive and romantic, starting college with no romantic experience, and excited to see what her academic career has to offer.
Flannery is an aspiring writer, and Sylvia Brownrigg tells the story from her point of view. This gives the reader a real insight into her thoughts and feelings as the book develops.
Early in the novel, Flannery becomes mesmerised by Anne, a PhD student who teaches one of Flannery’s classes. Anne is clever, beautiful and worldly – and Flannery is instantly captivated by her.

Before long, Flannery and Anne engage in a friendship, which becomes a tentative relationship. Flannery falls in love and experiences a relationship that is both loving and intellectually stimulating for the very first time.
Keeping their relationship quiet from others, the romance is overwhelming at times for young Flannery as she attempts to find out who she is, who she is attracted to, and what love really means.
My Review of ‘Pages For You’
I really enjoyed this book. Brownrigg’s writing style is so poetic and beautiful – and I’m a sucker for a good coming-of-age novel.
Every sentence is beautifully written, and I couldn’t help but feel swept up in the gorgeous imagery and intimate scenes between Flannery and Anne.
I loved the settings of ‘Pages For You’. From busy, hectic New York to crisp New England campus life, everything felt so real and alive. Brownrigg’s writing really jumped off the page.
I have to say, I wasn’t a huge fan of Anne’s character in ‘Pages For You’. While Flannery was infatuated with Anne, Anne herself always seemed less excited by the relationship – perhaps to show the immaturity and naivety of Flannery.
However, I still loved watching their relationship unfurl – and Flannery’s coming-of-age story is both touching and engaging to read.
I love that both the characters in this book are open and honest with themselves about their attraction and their sexuality. Instead of labelling themselves, they enjoy their relationship with one another as two human beings. This feels very refreshing.
As an older, more experienced woman, Anne introduces Flannery to new things, people and experiences. She opens her eyes to the world around her – and I loved seeing all of the action through Flannery’s point of view.
Overall, I really enjoyed this beautiful tale of love and identity during college. I recommend checking it out. Sylvia Brownrigg has also written a second book called ‘Pages For Her’. This is based on Flannery’s life as an older woman – and it’s a fantastic read!
