There’s no better way to learn something new than a book! You can grow your business, understand new perspectives and get inspiration for your work.

If you’re a freelancer or remote worker, there’s always so much to think about. You need to learn how to run your business, manage your time, do your taxes, post on social media and connect with others.

Picking up a book can teach you all of this – and you can understand how successful business owners in your industry have created a business that works for them.

5 book recommendations for creative freelancers

So, what are the best books for creative freelancers? There are lots of great books out there – whether you’re looking for new ideas or you want to learn how to best run your business.

Let’s take a look at 5 books for creative freelancers in 2025.

1. ‘Happy Sexy Millionaire’ by Steven Bartlett

‘Happy Sexy Millionaire’ is all about Steven Barlett’s experiences growing a multi-million dollar business. He discusses where he started and the business lessons he’s learned along the way.

This book came to me at just the right time. I was coming out of a bad period of burnout, and it helped me re-evaluate and re-direct my freelance career.

There are some great lessons about fulfilment, love, success and how to look after yourself while you build your business. It’s also a short read – perfect for a weekend.

2. ‘The Freelance Bible’ by Alison Grade

‘The Freelance Bible’ by Alison Grade is a brilliant read for creative freelancers in all disciplines. I love the creative side of freelancing – but the practical side can be hard.

This book can help you learn how to negotiate, grow your client base, manage your work-life balance and even do your taxes!

My dad picked out this book for me from the library – and I think I read it in just one sitting. It’s got so many useful tips for self-employment, whether you’re a new freelancer or not.

3. ‘Sweetbitter’ by Stephanie Danler

I know it’s unusual to include a novel on a list of books for freelancers, but reading fiction is one of the best ways to get inspired.

Whether you’re a translator or writer, you might get an idea for a new project or you might learn a new way to express yourself.

‘Sweetbitter’ is a beautifully written account of working as a waiter in New York. It’s full of lovely prose – and the writer has done a lot of research to ensure the reader can understand the protagonist’s POV.

If ‘Sweetbitter’ isn’t your kind of book, choose a different novel. Simply the act of losing yourself in a brand new book will get your creative juices flowing.

4. ‘On Writing’ by Stephen King

‘On Writing’ by Stephen King is considered one of the greatest books about writing – and there’s a reason for that. King writes about his life, his writing and the ups and downs of his career.

The book is funny, down-to-earth and full of valuable advice for creatives. From improving your writing to getting your work out in the world, it’s the one book I recommend to any writer.

I felt so inspired after reading Stephen King’s memoir. Even if you’re not a writer, you can learn about the ups and downs of a fellow creative. You can understand how Stephen King faced rejection – and how he became the iconic author we know today.

If you’re short on time or just want a refresher, the Headway app offers a smart summary of ‘On Writing’, highlighting key takeaways and lessons. It’s a great way to revisit the core ideas or get inspired on the go!

5. ‘The Obstacle is the Way’ by Ryan Holiday

Ryan Holiday uses lessons from Stoic philosophy to teach readers about how to handle adversity and persist to get what you want.

There are lots of obstacles in the business world, but it’s often these problems that push us to achieve our best. As a freelancer, you need to understand how to deal with rejection and learn from your mistakes.

I’m currently reading ‘The Daily Stoic’ every day. It’s one of my favourite daily morning rituals – and I can’t wait to read ‘The Obstacle is the Way’.
