AD – This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Your approach to haircare will change and develop throughout your life – and everyone’s hair is different.

As you get older, you may see slow thinning of your hair, with hormonal changes in pregnancy, menstruation and menopause all affecting your hair’s texture and health.

That’s why it’s so important to look after your hair in your 20s and 30s. Whether you’re dealing with issues like hair loss, shedding, dandruff or hair damage, it’s essential to find simple ways to keep your hair looking and feeling good.

5 tips to look after your hair in your 20s – a list of dos and don’ts

There are lots of haircare dos and don’ts in your 20s, including:

  1. Do think about your hair type
  2. Don’t forget your diet
  3. Do protect against hair shedding
  4. Don’t overwash your hair
  5. Do get regular haircuts

Let’s take a closer look at how to care for your hair in your 20s…

1. Do think about your hair type

Different hair types need different haircare treatments. If you’ve got thick, dry hair like me, you might want to introduce coconut oil into your haircare routine to help you add a bit of moisture.

However, for those with thin, fine hair, you may need to avoid oily or wax-based styling products.

In your 20s, you need to think about how to best look after your individual hair type. That way, you can effectively care for your hair and give it exactly what it needs to stay happy and healthy.

2. Don’t forget your diet

Your hair health and diet go hand in hand – and what you put into your body can really affect how you look and feel.

Filling your diet with plenty of healthy fats, zinc and biotin can protect your hair. You’ll find these vitamins in foods like avocados, lentils, spinach and broccoli or you can use supplements to support your overall nutrition.

A diet lacking in nutrients can lead to slow hair growth or even hair loss, so it’s important to eat a healthy balanced diet for your hair – as well as your overall health and well-being.

3. Do protect against hair shedding

It’s important to protect against hair shedding in your 20s. A few things can lead to hair thinning, such as:

  • Poor diet or nutrition
  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep

Wearing the same hairstyle every day can lead to hair loss, especially if you choose a tight hairdo like a bun or ponytail. Make sure to get enough sleep every night and build a healthy work/life balance to reduce stress.

Be kind to your hair. Avoid bleach or heat treatments – and wear a hat and suncream when you spend time in the sun.

If you’re concerned about hair shedding, products like Vegamour GRO+ Advanced Hair Serum can help hydrate your scalp and support your skin barrier. Speak to your hairdresser or doctor for further advice and support.

4. Don’t overwash your hair

There’s no exact science as to how often you should wash your hair – it’s a tricky balance! I tend to avoid washing my hair more than twice a week, as I find that’s enough to keep it in good condition without added volume.

However, underwashing or overwashing your hair can lead to scalp problems – so you need to find the right balance for you. Choose a sulfate-free shampoo to be a little kinder to your skin. These products contain fewer harsh chemicals and they won’t strip away your natural moisture.

Lukewarm water may be gentler on your hair – and a blast of cold water at the end of your shower can lock in moisture.

5. Do get regular haircuts

A regular trim can help you maintain healthy hair in your 20s. As your hair grows between haircuts, you’ll start to develop split ends. These can make your hair easily tangled – and brushing split ends can lead to further damage.

Even if you’re growing your hair long, you still need to schedule regular haircuts, as your hair won’t grow properly if it’s damaged.

You’ll know you’re ready for a haircut when you start to see split ends or if you’re noticing more knots and tangles when brushing. Your hair may also look dull or limp if it’s not growing as it should.
