It’s 5 months since I started freelancing– and I love it!
I took the decision to leave my part-time job and start working for myself in February 2022, and the time has just flown by.
Although there are some negatives to freelancing (which I will definitely write about soon), overall there are so many things I love about being a freelancer.
It’s been an exciting and incredible journey for me, and I’m constantly learning new things about freelance life and my role.
In this post, I’ve put together 6 things I absolutely love about being a freelancer. If freelancing is something you’re thinking about for the future or a step you want to take soon, I hope I can help you think about some of the positive aspects of the job.
6 things I love about being a freelancer
1. Flexible schedule
I think a flexible schedule is high on every freelancer’s list!
I love being able to create my own routine, as I am the kind of person who needs structure, and I did worry that a “traditional” job was the only way to stay structured.
However, I love creating my own work day. I also love the fact that I’m the one who can change my routine at any time, and I don’t always have to stick to the same schedule.
Client deadlines and the chance to work with fantastic people means that I stay grounded to what I need to do, but I can also set the pace day by day.
2. Food!
I couldn’t write a post about the things I love about freelancing without mentioning the food. I love having the chance to make any food I like during the day.
When I was working in a “traditional” job, I would prioritise time getting ready over making a healthy breakfast- and my stomach definitely didn’t thank me for it.
Now, I can make a delicious breakfast while I work. I always take the time to make a warm lunch as a remote worker, too.
Freelancing has also given me so many more opportunities to eat out. I love to try out cafés in my local area throughout the week if I need a break from the house.
3. Different working environments
The freelance lifestyle works for me because I get to try out lots of different working environments- and I can change where I work depending on my mood.
Instead of sticking to my desk, I can work at a café or even in the garden when the sun is out. I love having the flexibility to choose a working environment that suits me everyday.
If I’m not feeling very well, I might do work on the sofa for a day. Or if I’m being unproductive at home, I can head out to the library or my parents’ house for a change of pace.
4. Freedom
I love the freedom that comes with freelancing. I can choose my jobs, choose my hours and organise my time.
This terrified me at first- and it still does sometimes. However, I love waking up everyday knowing that I can control what I do and when I do it. If I want to work for just the morning, I can. Or if I need to take time off for a driving lesson, I can.
I tend to take occasional mornings or afternoons off work, instead of a full week at a time, for example, but I love that it’s up to me.
I think freedom is one of the key factors that really draws people to the freelance lifestyle, from translators to content writers.
For me, it was more about doing what I love- but the freedom to set my own schedule has definitely been a fantastic perk too!
5. Working outside
The Summer months can be hard when you’re working, and I find it difficult to concentrate when the sun is shining outside.
However, I’ve found that doing a bit of work outside or taking an extra long lunch break in the garden makes it all worth it.
I love that I can head to the park for a sunbathe or even take the afternoon off if I’ve finished all my work for the day. The Summer months are my favourite, so it’s nice to make the most of them whenever I can.
6. The work
One of the main things I love about being a freelancer is the work! I absolutely love what I do, and I’m so excited that I get to write everyday- and get paid for it.
When I finished University, I knew I wanted to do something that involved writing or blogging- and my role as a freelancer now includes all of those things and much more.
What do you love about your job? If you’re a freelancer, what’s your favourite part of the job? Is there anything you love about being a freelancer?

Freelancing like this sounds absolutely wonderful and exactly the type of job I’d want to do (or something similar). I think it makes a job a healthier part of life and not one that causes so much stress, exhaustion and anxiety. Thanks for sharing!

So true! These are the things I like about being a freelancer too. And mostly our freelance work is related to our passion and dreams, right. I’m more committed to my freelance work than my daytime job. Hehehe ^_^

That’s so true Fadima, most of us choose jobs that relate to what we’re truly passionate about. I felt that way too x

I have a lot of these positives with being a full-time blogger but my freelancing career never really took off at all but I know a lot of people who do it and absolutely love it x

It can be hard! I think a lot of these work for other careers, such as full-time blogging x

So happy to hear it’s all working out for you. One of the things I love about my job is that no two days are ever the same. At some point in the next couple of years, I hope to leave my job and do freelance or short-term contract work.
