5 Ways to Switch Off After a Day at Work

AD- This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It can be hard to switch off after work- especially if you’re working from home or you find it hard to leave work at the office.

With more and more of us working from home nowadays, our working lives are starting to encroach on our personal lives, and it can be hard to create that separation. However, it’s so important to switch off after a day at work if you want to maintain a healthy work/life balance.

Instead of just switching off your laptop or leaving the office, you also need to actively put work out of your mind.

You need to give yourself a much-needed break at the end of the day, especially if you want to get a good night’s sleep and avoid stress and burn-out.

Whether you’re a freelancer or you just want to switch off after a day in the office, I’ve put together 5 simple ways to switch off after a day at work.

There are so many ways to switch off after a day at work, including:

  1. Put your phone in a different room
  2. Get out of the house
  3. Spend time cooking a nice meal
  4. Chat with a loved one
  5. Do something completely different

Let’s take a look at each of these ideas in a little more detail…

1. Put your phone in a different room

I’ve found one of the best ways to switch off after a day at work is to put my phone in a different room. That way, I’m not tempted to check it for any reason.

If you don’t use a separate work phone, it can be hard to switch off from work. You might go to check a message, and an email will pop up from work.

Putting your phone in a different room or removing all work notifications is a great way to help you properly switch off after a stressful day at work, and you can avoid mindless scrolling.

2. Get out of the house

If you’ve been working from home all day, it’s so important to get out of the house and get a break from your desk. You could head out for an evening run or go for a short walk to clear your head.

If you’re working from home, it’s a great idea to walk away from your desk and not go back again until the next day, as you would if you worked in an office.

3. Spend time cooking a nice meal

After you’ve finished a day at work, you probably don’t feel like spending time cooking over a hot stove. However, making yourself a meal can be a therapeutic experience.

This could be something super simple, like a ready meal, or something more complex if you enjoy cooking. Spending time on a different task to your job is a great way to switch off from work, and it will give your mind the break it needs after a stressful or busy day.

4. Chat with a loved one

One of the best ways to switch off after a day at work is to chat with someone you love, and get a bit of human interaction!

Colleagues are great, but just getting that distance from your work responsibilities can help you switch off and focus on what someone else has been doing with their day.

This is also a great way to speak about anything that’s on your mind. Sometimes discussing any work issues can help you let them go and properly switch off after a day at work.

5. Do something completely different

If you offer freelance translation services, stay away from anything in a different language. If you complete Academic Evaluation Services at work, watch something light-hearted and comedic to switch off after a day at work.

For me, I’ve always loved writing- and my blog used to be a fun way to switch off. However, as I’ve started to write more for my job, I’ve found new passion projects to enjoy. These activities help me switch off from my work.

Read a book, do some gardening, go out with friends, watch some TV, get away from your screen or do a bit of baking. As long as it is completely different to your job, do it!

How do you switch off after a busy day at work? Do you think you’ll use these ideas to switch off from work? What is your favourite way to switch off after a day working from home?

  3. I can see how getting our of the house might help you switch off after work, especially when you’ve been working from home. I can also see ho leaving your phone in the other room might help too. But I’m not sure what I’d do with myself if I left my phone in a different room ha ha ha

  5. Working from home I had to apply all your tips and they really work! Something else I did is make sure my work desk is far from the living area and bedroom so I don’t see it after work once I disconnect!

  6. Great tips! I think it is also important to find breaks to switch off durning the day also. No phones at lunch, or a 30 minute meditation worked into your busy schedule. It has done wonders for my mental health.

  8. There are some great options here! After my husband finishes work, he usually comes home and pours us each a beer or makes us some sort of snack. That’s my sign to put my computer away and step away from work as well. Whether we’re relaxing outside, cuddling puppies, or watching TV, that ‘wind down’ time is super important for us.

    1. I think it can help when your partner comes in from work, I have the same situation as I also work from home. Having someone who immediately creates that evening routine can really help 🙂 x

  11. These are great suggestions. Especially getting rid of your phone. I put a lock on my social media when I have reached a certain time limit. You can really get sucked into your phone and miss out on so much and can leave you amped up before bed. Great post!
