5 Tips to Boost Your Twitter Following as a Freelancer

AD- This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions remain my own.

Whether you’re a freelancer or a blogger, you’re probably using Twitter to reach out to people on a regular basis.

Building your online presence and understanding how to connect with people can be a tricky business- and I’m still learning every single day.

I’m so grateful that I created my Twitter account alongside my blog, as it’s given me a head start when trying to find freelance opportunities online or connect with amazing bloggers.

But if you’re just starting out as a freelancer, it can be daunting to know how to use social media to push your personal brand or get regular blogging and freelance gigs.

In this blog post, I’ve put together 5 tips to boost your Twitter following as a freelancer

There are a few ways to boost your Twitter following as a freelancer, including:

  1. Engage with other people
  2. Be cheeky
  3. Stay present
  4. Schedule whenever you can
  5. Reach out to a range of different people

1. Don’t be afraid to engage with other people

Engaging with other users is the purpose of social media, and it is the key to everything when it comes to Twitter. If you don’t follow and support other people online, you’re never going to get that support back to your channel.

Follow people on Twitter who interest you, like their posts, comment your ideas and share their posts whenever they resonate with you.

Everyone is in the same boat online, especially when you’re just starting out- so don’t be afraid to make those connections and push those friendships!

2. Be cheeky- but not too cheeky

Using social media is all about getting the balance right between connecting and engaging, and pushing that too far.

Messaging people and begging that they check out your content is not likely to end up in your favour. However, recognising an opportunity and grabbing it is likely to pay off!

For example, I noticed someone online struggling to keep up with their blog, so I sent them a quick message to see if my freelance services could help. A few months down the line, they are one of my clients- and all because I saw an opportunity online and I went for it.

These things might not always pay off. However, what’s the worst that could happen? You’ll just get left on read!

3. Be present

One of the main things I’ve learned about boosting your following on Twitter is you always need to be present.

Obviously, for the sake of your mental health and general sanity, you need to take lots of breaks from social media. However, take time to retweet, follow, like and tweet out your thoughts on a regular basis. This is so important to boost your Twitter following as a freelancer.

It’s about showing that you’re there, and this will also show potential clients that you’re regularly creating content, too.

4. Schedule, schedule, schedule

This links to the point above, but in order to be present all the time you need to get used to scheduling in advance.

This means you can start conversations and engage with other users, without actually needing to be online 24/7. I love scheduling my tweets via Twitter directly, but you can also use scheduling tools such as Buffer or Hootsuite.

5. Reach out to a variety of people

When you’re growing your Twitter following as a freelancer, you don’t want to cut out people who could potentially give you good jobs.

Choose who you follow based on your interests, but also follow a few people outside your field of interest to see what’s going on in different subject areas. You never know who might have something interesting for you.

I follow a range of online users, including fantastic companies that offer translation services to people across the world, and bloggers who specialise in lifestyle topics.

I love finding out about new topics or services- and you never know when an opportunity or a new friend is around the corner!

  1. Love your ideas! especially the one about being ‘cheeky’ .. there are a lot of people on social media so you gotta stand out otherwise they won’t notice you. And if you seem interesting, genuine and have great content, then they will follow you

  2. Great post – I do try to schedule posts. I have a planner to help me stay organized and remember which posts went on what platform at what time. And since I post for clients, I need to be better about posting for my own blog too!

  4. These are great tips Eleanor! I’ve recently gotten into the habit of scheduling everything for my two blogs and my online shop every Sunday. While it takes many hours, it’s done for the week! I love that you mention not begging people to check out content. Private messages are my pet peeve on Twitter! Thanks for these tips 🙂

  5. Thank you for sharing these useful tips!

I know I need to do the first tip more, but I am afraid to engage, as I sometimes stumble over my words, and I don’t know what to say. I only follow people who interest me and share the content I relate to; it’s just engaging via conversations I struggle with; I need to work on that!

It is amazing that you put yourself out there and offered your VA services so you could help!

Combining numbers 3 and 4, I found that scheduling some Tweets has allowed me to be more present on Twitter.

Thank you again for sharing these valuable tips! 😊

  10. Thanks for sharing these tips, I find reaching out to people within the niche is a lot harder, as they don’t seem to comment on your blog once you have engaged with you, which I thought would happen, but it might happen one day 🙂

    1. That makes sense! I think it can be hard to get that engagement, especially when you first start building your account. I’m sure you’ll get there soon 🙂 thank you for commenting Nic
