6 Steps to a More Effective Blogging Routine

Blogging can be a tough craft to master, especially when you’re trying to create a lasting routine- or you just want to make sure you’re spending a little more time growing your site.

In my experience, at the centre of an effective blogging routine is knowing what you want and need from your blogging day.

You also need to know how to create an effective, productive system that works for you.

Everyone is different! In this blog post, I’ve put together 6 steps you can follow to create a more effective blogging routine that works for you and your blog

1. Choose a time to start

I mentioned this in my post about being more productive during the mornings– but I really do think it’s an important part of creating an effective blogging routine!

It’s not about starting early if you find that tricky, or about choosing the same time every day. It’s about choosing your time and sticking to it.

You can choose the time you want to start from day to day, and it doesn’t always have to be the same time every day- especially if you’re fitting blogging around your work, studies or childcare.

2. Take regular breaks

The secret to a more effective blogging routine is knowing when you need to take breaks.

When it comes to blogging, you spend a lot of time talking to people online or staring at a computer screen.

Take regular breaks from your computer and phone, allow yourself to talk to your friends and family, and don’t forget to get outside whenever possible.

Blogger burn-out is very real– and it can lead to a lack of motivation if you don’t allow your mind and body to properly rest.

3. Only timetable if it works for you

I see a lot of articles pushing the importance of timetabling your day, and deciding how you should manage each part of your week.

If that works for you, that’s fantastic and I know there are some great apps out there that help you maintain a good work/life timetable.

However, I think it’s just as important to understand if timetabling doesn’t work for you! I like to create a to-do list, but I find it restrictive to completely timetable my day.

Obviously, there will be some blogging tasks you have to force yourself to do, but don’t feel like you have to create a solid, rigid timetable in order to effectively manage your time. Everyone is different!

4. Write whenever you can

This is a big one for me, and it’s been so helpful when fitting my freelance work around my job.

I write whenever inspiration strikes- whether that’s just before bed, just before I run off to work, or in between time with my family.

If you’re like me and writing is your favourite thing about blogging, you need to write whenever inspiration strikes and enjoy your writing time.

5. Track your time

This is something I started doing in April- and it’s a great way to create a more effective routine.

If you know what you’re spending time on and how much time you’re spending on it, you can create a lasting routine that helps you stick to more productive habits.

I’ve found that tracking my time also means I understand which tasks I need to focus on, and it should help me create a better routine in the coming weeks.

6. Know when you work best

One of the best things to do when you want to create a more effective blogging routine is to know what you want, and when you work the best.

For example, I find it hard to get started with work straight away in the morning and so I prefer to start mid-morning, and then I do most of my blogging in the afternoons and evenings.

That’s just me, so make sure you know when you work best and create an effective routine around it.

There’s no point making yourself work during the evenings if you’ll be too tired, or forcing yourself to wake up super early if you know you’re more productive in the afternoons!
