These past months have been some of the weirdest in memory, but this difficult situation has given us all some free time to read those books we’ve always wanted to read, but haven’t found the time, or even to re-read our favourites.
But if you’re not so into reading- or just don’t feel like it- then you could watch the movies instead. So, here’s my Top Book-to-Film Adaptations to watch during lockdown, in case you need some recommendations!

1. ‘The Glass Castle’ by Jeannette Walls (film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, 2017)
In this film, we discover the true story of the author of the book and her relationship with her family, especially her father. This relationship evolves and changes through her life. I warn you- grab a pack of handkercheifs before watching this film, because you’ll definitely cry.
2. ‘And Then There Were None’ by Agatha Christie (film directed by Craig Viveiros, 2015)
This book has been adapted many times prior to this version, but this is the one I
watched some weeks before lockdown started and it blew my mind. If you’re looking for a thrilling mystery, this is your film.
Plus the cast are incredibly good, not to mention the story itself- truly Agatha Christie.
3. ‘V for Vendetta’ by Alan Moore and David Lloyd (film directed by James McTeigue, 2005)
Yes, I know V for Vendetta is not an “actual” book, it’s a graphic novel, but the film is a classic and a must- so let’s just pretend it’s a book.
Why not spend your lockdown watching an exaggerated portrayal of Capitalism and the control of the government? After watching this film, we’ll all come out of this lockdown a bit more rebellious!
4. ‘Carol’, based on ‘The Price of Salt’ by Patricia Highsmith (film directed by Todd Haynes, 2015)
Did someone say it’s Pride Month? I think I’ve heard that? Yes! So why not watch some great LGBT+ films, starting with Carol. This loose adaptation of The Price of Salt shows a lesbian couple in the early 1950s as they try to fight against society’s prejudices in order to be together, and how this will affect their lives.
This film is so good and talks about real problems experienced even today. If you want to celebrate Pride Month by watching LGBT+ films, or you want to understand the feelings of the LGBT+ community, then this is a great film to watch.
5. ‘The Hate U Give’ by Angie Thomas (film directed by George Tillman Jr., 2018)
In the current climate, it’s hard to talk about this adaptation. This is an important novel (and film adaptation), covering important modern themes. If you want to try and make a difference right now then you can donate, contribute, sign petitions, and spread the message.
And that’s all! I hope this list will help you make lockdown a little more entertaining, and if you really enjoy one of these films then I hope you take the time to read the book- because we all know that books are always better than films!

We’re just about to watch The Hate You Give. I read the book about a month back and am hopeful that my usually non reader daughter will read it when she’s watched the film.

I had forgotten that V for Vendetta was based off a graphic novel! It’s such a great film. I have yet to watch THUG but the book is absolutely amazing and so incredibly relevant right now. Great picks! 😀

V for Vendetta is such a great movie, I watched it some time ago and it’s something I would like to watch again. The Hate You Give is another amazing well written movie. Loved it. I would love to watch Glass Castle based on your recommendations. Thanks for sharing

I read The Glass Castle years ago, but never saw the movie. I have The Hate U Give on my reading list, and plan to watch the movie when I’m finished with the book. Great post!

I’ve literally not seen one of these films. I think I need to create a watch list and check them out. I always find the books to be better than the films in adaptions, unfortunately.
